Human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore took a swipe at former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami on Monday during proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, openly taunting him over his current legal troubles.
In a video now making the rounds online, Sowore confronted Malami and told him, “You see how it feels now to be persecuted. When you were with Buhari, you were bragging. We warned you then that there was failure in the justice system, but you didn’t listen, and now the system is dealing with you.” He doubled down on his message, adding, “There is failure in the system. The system is dealing with you now.”
But the drama did not end with words alone. In what many saw as a symbolic move, Sowore stretched out a “revolutionary cap” toward Malami during the face-off. He said, “I want to give you my cap. This is a revolutionary cap,” pointing to what he viewed as the irony of Malami’s present situation.
Even with his sharp remarks, Sowore briefly acknowledged Malami’s strength, saying, “At least I’m glad that you are strong,” suggesting that Malami had managed to endure the pressure surrounding his controversial time in office.
Sowore also widened his criticism beyond Malami, saying the justice system’s problems cut across the board and affect both those in power and those who challenge authority. “We are not all on the same side… even the oppressors are oppressing you now,” he said, stressing what he described as deep-rooted faults within Nigeria’s legal system.
Keeping to his usual tough stance on leadership and accountability, Sowore wrapped up his comments with a firm warning: “As far as the Nigerian project is concerned, no matter how powerful you people are, we will never support you. We are resilient till tomorrow.”
Malami, however, pushed back briefly, insisting he remained steady in the face of criticism. “I can never be down. Well, I have been attending all my court sittings. I will keep attending. And I remain strong,” he said.
