Electoral Act: Nigeria not ready for electronic voting at polling units – Dickson

Senator Seriake Dickson, a member of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, has said that Nigeria is not yet ready to use electronic voting at polling units.

He warned against putting too much focus on what he called “real-time” transmission of election results.

Speaking on ARISE News on Tuesday during discussions on proposed changes to the Electoral Act, Dickson said that adopting electronic voting or focusing on instant result uploads alone would not guarantee credible elections.

“The country is not operating real-time electronic voting. The notion and fixation of real-time shouldn’t be because that is not something we are practising,” he said.

Dickson stressed that ensuring transparency in elections is more than following technological trends, adding that the constant emphasis on “real-time” results is misplaced.
