Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was taken into custody by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) released him on bail.
El-Rufai, who had been held by the EFCC since Monday over allegations of corruption, was granted bail around 8 p.m. and was immediately picked up by DSS agents reportedly waiting outside the EFCC headquarters.
The arrest is said to be connected to allegations that he illegally intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
A senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), El-Rufai had earlier responded to the EFCC’s invitation on Monday over alleged corruption during his tenure as governor.
He arrived at the EFCC headquarters with hundreds of supporters in attendance.
This move follows El-Rufai narrowly avoiding arrest last Thursday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
After the airport incident, he accused NSA Nuhu Ribadu of masterminding the attempted arrest in a series of interviews.
