The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday handed over cheques worth over N2.43 billion to 1,075 families of police officers who lost their lives while on duty across Nigeria.
The presentation, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, settled outstanding insurance claims going back more than seven years.
At the event, the IGP said taking care of police officers and their families is a key priority for his leadership. He emphasised that the Force must show responsibility and compassion to those who make the ultimate sacrifice.
“This ceremony represents more than the presentation of financial benefits; it is a solemn acknowledgement of the courage, commitment, and sacrifices made by officers who served this nation with honour,” he said.
Disu revealed that a total of N2,435,421,584.11 was paid through the Group Life Assurance and the IGP Family Welfare Schemes. The payments cover policy years from 2018 to 2026, including claims that were previously pending.
Speaking directly to the families, he offered condolences and reminded them that no amount of money can replace the loved ones they lost.
“These officers were not only members of the Nigeria Police Force; they were fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who placed the safety of others above their own. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he added.
The IGP also promised that the Force would step up efforts to improve administrative processes, cut delays in claim settlements, and ensure that benefits are delivered on time and transparently. He said modern technology would be used to improve record keeping and accountability in welfare management.
The Force Insurance Officer, ACP Ameh, said the payments show the IGP’s strong commitment to putting the welfare of officers and their families first.
She added that the police leadership has instructed insurance companies to settle claims quickly and warned that any firm that delays payments will be blacklisted.
Ameh advised beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and described the payments as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Force’s welfare system.
