The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office following the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
A Presidency source revealed on Tuesday that Egbetokun will be succeeded by Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Force CID Annex, Lagos.
According to the source, the president asked Egbetokun to resign during a meeting held on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023. The Police Council later confirmed him as substantive IGP on October 31, 2023.
Egbetokun, who was 58 at the time of his appointment, was scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, when he would attain the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, the National Assembly amended the Police Act, clearing the way for him to complete his four-year tenure as IGP unless the president decided otherwise.
Following the amendment, he was expected to remain in office and conclude his term on October 31, 2027.
