A deadly road crash involving a trailer travelling to Gujungu in Jigawa State has killed more than 30 people at Kwanar Barde, located in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The accident happened in the early hours of Sunday and was reportedly linked to reckless driving. Several other victims sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling it heartbreaking and describing it as a major loss to the affected families and the people of the state.
His reaction was made public in a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa.
“According to reports, the fatal accident involved a trailer heading towards Gujungu, which allegedly crashed due to reckless driving, leading to the death of over 30 persons, while many others sustained serious injuries.
“Governor Yusuf prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and asked Allah to grant their families the strength to bear the painful loss.
“He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state,” the statement read.
The governor directed the Kano State Ministry of Health to immediately ensure that all victims receiving treatment in hospitals are given free and adequate medical care.
He also instructed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to swiftly assess the situation and put support measures in place for the families affected by the tragedy.
Governor Yusuf further cautioned motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to shun reckless driving and strictly obey traffic rules to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, medical and humanitarian teams have been deployed to provide assistance to the injured and support the affected families.
