FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has shocked many by saying he “would have shot” Channels TV journalist Seun Okinbaloye over comments hinting that Nigeria could turn into a one-party state.
The minister made the statement during a media chat on Friday in Abuja. He was responding to Okinbaloye’s warning that the 2027 elections might be dominated by just one party because of the leadership mess in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The crisis in ADC worsened after INEC declared it would no longer recognise factions led by David Mark or Nafiu Bala Gombe, following a Court of Appeal ruling.
Okinbaloye had pointed out that Nigeria’s democracy could be in danger if opposition parties, especially ADC, fail to take part in the 2027 elections.
Wike fired back at the journalist, accusing him of being biased. “I was surprised yesterday, thoroughly surprised. When I was watching Politics Today, Seun, if there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” Wike said.
He continued: “How can you, as an interviewer, say we cannot have only one party? You are an interviewer; you are now telling them your own views. There is nothing wrong with asking questions, but you are now the one on national television making that kind of statement, which means you have already taken a position.”
