Former Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso is reportedly ready to take over as Liverpool manager if Arne Slot leaves at the end of this season, according to BILD.
Liverpool’s defence of their Premier League crown has been disappointing. Slot won the title last season by 10 points, but the Reds are now struggling.
The team currently sits in fifth place, 21 points behind league leaders Arsenal, making Slot’s position at the club uncertain beyond the summer.
Sources say the club’s top management do not want to make a move immediately, as Liverpool is still competing in two major tournaments.
The Reds are set to face Manchester City in the FA Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Alonso, who was let go by Real Madrid earlier this year, is now the preferred choice for Liverpool’s senior officials to lead a summer rebuild.
