Aisha Yesufu, the well-known activist and close ally of Peter Obi, has said she will stand against the former Anambra State governor if he breaks his promise to serve only one term as president in 2027.
Speaking with Arise TV, Yesufu made it clear that Obi’s one-term pledge is not up for negotiation and must be kept.
She recalled a private chat with Obi after the 2023 presidential election, where she personally asked him to give his word.
“After the 2023 election, I went to Mr Peter Obi, and I looked him in the eye, and I said, Sir, I need your word on this,” Yesufu said, stressing how seriously she values keeping promises. She added, “I am someone whose words mean a lot to me. Even if I have to lose my life on it, I keep to my words.”
Yesufu said Obi confirmed his commitment during that talk. “I asked him, are you going to do only one term? And he said, ‘Aisha, I’ve told you before, I will do only one term, so you can do so much, you can achieve so much within that one term,’” she recalled.
The activist said that promise gave her confidence in Obi and reinforced her support for his political journey. But she didn’t hold back in issuing a warning: anyone who tries to twist their word will face her opposition.
“I can tell you now also, if and when Mr Peter Obi gets into office by the grace of God, and he does four years, and he says he wants to do an additional four years, I, Aisha Yesufu, will be amongst those that will be against it,” she said firmly. “If you said something, you must stay by it.”
