The Kogi State Government has confirmed the kidnapping of 24 people from an orphanage in the state. Among them are 23 pupils and the wife of the owner of the facility.
According to the government, the orphanage was not registered with the state. Despite this, security agencies have already begun rescue efforts, which have so far led to the rescue of 15 of the abducted persons.
The State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, shared this in a statement on Monday, describing the attack, which happened on Sunday, as unfortunate and one that could have been avoided.
“Fifteen pupils have been rescued following the swift intervention of security agencies, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.
“The facility, identified as the Dahallukitab Group of Schools, was operating illegally in a remote, bushy location without registration with the state government or the knowledge of relevant authorities and security agencies.
“The incident occurred late on April 26, 2026, when unknown gunmen invaded the premises and abducted 23 pupils alongside the wife of the proprietor.
“Security operatives, led by the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State and supported by other agencies, have responded promptly, leading to the rescue of 15 of the victims.”
Fanwo praised the quick action and coordination of the security forces, saying their response helped reduce the impact of the attack.
He also said efforts are still ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and ensure those behind the kidnapping are caught and punished.
The government raised concern about the growing problem of unregistered schools and orphanages operating in hidden or remote areas. It warned that such places create serious security risks, especially in today’s situation.
“The operation of such facilities outside regulatory oversight not only undermines safety standards but also exposes innocent children to avoidable dangers,” the Commissioner stated.
The Kogi State Government urged all school and orphanage operators to properly register and follow official guidelines, stressing the need to involve authorities for safety checks and protection.
It also restated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that security operations are ongoing to fully restore control of the situation.
