Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 31 suspected internet fraudsters during a sting operation at a so-called fraud training academy located at Becki Estate, Karu in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said in a statement that 18 laptop computers and other gadgets were recovered from the suspects during the raid.

He added that the suspects, made up of two alleged kingpins and several interns, were caught while they were receiving training on how to carry out internet fraud.
The statement also revealed that the proprietor of the academy forcefully seized victims’ mobile phones, cutting them off completely from any contact with the outside world.

“Furthermore, corporal punishment was the order of the day, with heavy-handed physical assault meted out to interns who were seen to be recalcitrant,” Oyedele noted.
The EFCC said the suspects will be taken to court once investigations are fully completed.
