After Failing as Power Minister, Adelabu Resigns to Give Oyo People a ‘Taste’

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position in the Federal Government to focus on his ambition to become governor of Oyo State.

His resignation comes at a time when the power sector has faced heavy criticism, with many Nigerians still complaining about unstable electricity supply, frequent outages, and weak improvement in overall power delivery under his watch.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu said his decision will take effect from April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth handover.

According to him, the step was taken with gratitude and respect for the office he held.

“I write with a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude to formally tender my resignation as the Minister of Power of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This resignation is to take effect on 30th April 2026, in order to allow sufficient time for a smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities,” he wrote.

During his time as minister, the power sector continued to struggle with major issues such as unstable national grid performance, repeated system disruptions, and ongoing complaints from households and businesses about poor electricity supply. While he pushed reforms on tariffs, revenue collection, and sector funding, many Nigerians say the real impact on daily power supply remained limited.

Despite efforts to stabilise the system and reduce government subsidy pressure, the situation on the ground remained difficult, with frequent blackouts and weak infrastructure still affecting supply across the country.

Now stepping away from the federal cabinet, Adelabu is shifting his focus back to Oyo State politics, where he hopes to win the governorship seat and bring his leadership experience to state-level governance.
