Boko Haram fighters attacked a military outpost in Borno State, killed at least 22 soldiers of the Nigerian Army.
The attack happened overnight in Monguno, a town in Borno, just as the military was planning a fresh push against the insurgents. In recent times, the group has also caused serious injuries to ongoing Nigerian military operations in the region.
Among those affected was Colonel I.A. Muhammad and his troops, who were attached to the 242 Battalion in Borno, the centre of a long-running insurgency that has lasted about 17 years.
Colonel Muhammad is now the latest in a growing list of senior officers killed by Boko Haram fighters. In less than two weeks, at least six senior military officers have reportedly lost their lives in similar attacks carried out by the group.
