Residents of Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State were able to push back an attempted invasion by armed bandits on Sunday evening. However, the attack still left at least 10 people dead in a nearby settlement.
A resident, who did not want his name mentioned for safety reasons, said the attackers arrived in the evening but were stopped from entering Gurbi as locals quickly came together to defend their community.
He explained that after being blocked, the armed men shifted their attack to people who were fleeing the scene, shooting them at close range.
“There are currently over 10 bodies in Nagodi area, a village in front of Gurbi. After the attackers left, the corpses were moved back to Gurbi,”
The resident also expressed anger over what he described as a slow response from security agencies, saying early warnings were not acted on.
“We had alerted security operatives as soon as we got information about the planned attack, but there was no response until after the killings. They only came later to assist in evacuating the bodies,”
As of the time this report was filed, neither the Katsina State Police Command nor the state government had released any official statement on the incident.
