President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday made a light and playful comment about Senate President Godswil Akpabio during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service building.
While speaking at the event, Tinubu joked that he could send the Senate President “to the other side” to act on his behalf.
“Senate President, I will send you to the other side to represent me, and then you can scatter them anyway you like. They’re confused,” the President said.
The comment came in a relaxed moment at the ceremony, but it landed in a tense political atmosphere already building around the country.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) had recently accused the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, of trying to destabilise it. The opposition party also claimed it was being intimidated when trying to secure venues for its events.
However, those claims were rejected on Monday by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who denied any form of intimidation or obstruction.
Tinubu’s remark, though made in a joking tone, comes at a time when political tensions between major parties and opposition groups remain high, with accusations and counter-accusations shaping the public debate.
