Gunmen Kill 40 in Nighttime Attack on Palm Sunday in Jos

Over 40 people are feared dead, and several others injured, after suspected gunmen attacked Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos.

The violence erupted on Palm Sunday night, March 29, 2026, around 7:50 p.m., throwing the community into panic as residents ran for safety amid heavy gunfire.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the area and opened fire on unsuspecting residents before escaping. Security forces, including the Nigerian Army, reportedly arrived at the scene around 8:45 p.m. to restore order and secure the community.

According to ARISE, on Monday morning, March 30, 26 bodies were counted, while the full number of casualties in other affected areas is still unknown, as some injured were taken away during the attack and others transported to the mortuary.

Tension remains high, with residents urged to stay alert while authorities work to stabilize the community.

In response, the Plateau State Government announced a 48-hour curfew in Jos North, starting from midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026, to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the attack, calling it “barbaric and unprovoked,” and assured that security agencies are tracking the perpetrators.

Residents have been advised to stay calm and assist security agencies by providing information that could help ongoing investigations.
