A close associate of actor Alex Ekubo has revealed previously undisclosed details about the star’s final months, saying the Nollywood figure had been privately battling advanced liver cancer.
Filmmaker Stanley Ontop said in an Instagram post that Ekubo was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2024. Ontop wrote that the actor underwent treatment and a liver transplant, and even returned to film sets for a short period. He added that the transplanted liver later failed, triggering complications that led to the actor’s decline and eventual death. Ekubo was 40.
Stanley wrote on his Instagram page: “Alexx was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2024. After undergoing treatment and a liver transplant, he briefly returned to work. Unfortunately, the liver failed again and complications arose, and his condition deteriorated until his passing.”
Ontop also urged the public to stop circulating unverified reports about Ekubo’s passing and asked for privacy for the bereaved family during the difficult time.
