Edo Assembly Suspends Sitting Over Gunshots Scare in Complex

There was tension at the Edo State House of Assembly yesterday as the leadership called off its first sitting of the year after suspected gunshot pellets were found in the chambers.

A hole was discovered in the chamber’s roof, and the suspected pellets were seen on the seat of the House Majority Leader, Jonathan Ibhamawu.

Sources said some lawmakers were already at the complex, preparing for the day’s session, when the items were found. The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, was quickly invited to investigate and assured that his officers would determine the cause of the incident.

Speaking to journalists later, Ibhamawu said security agencies were handling the investigation and the sitting had been postponed until further notice.

“We were ready for sitting today, but our attention was called to an incident here. I immediately contacted the Commissioner of Police and the Department of State Services, DSS. We have left everything to them to investigate and give a full report on what happened.

“For now, everything is fine. We were eager to start our sitting today, but because of this incident, we need to give the chambers to security agents to comb it properly and provide a report that satisfies everyone.

“Be assured, everything is calm in the House. We are not distracted, and we will soon return to our normal routine.”
