Former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai says he expects to be arrested by federal authorities “any moment now.”
In an interview with BBC Hausa, el-Rufai revealed that four people who worked closely with him while he was governor have already been detained. He added that he believes he could be next.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of putting strong pressure on politicians, either to join the party or stay in it, as the race for 2027 elections begins to take shape.
“Four people who worked with me in Kaduna have been arrested. So, for me, it’s only a matter of time—they will come for me too,” he said.
El-Rufai, who led Kaduna for eight years under the APC before switching to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has recently stepped up his criticism of President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party.
His comments come amid rising political defections and intense jockeying across the country as various camps prepare for the 2027 presidential election.
On Tuesday, el-Rufai also said he was never friends with Tinubu.
He explained that their disagreement started long before Tinubu became APC’s presidential candidate in 2022.
“There is an assumption that I was ever Tinubu’s friend. I was not. We never got along. We never had a personal relationship like the one I had with General Buhari,” he said.
