Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, of being behind an attempt to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday.
El-Rufai said the incident happened shortly after he arrived in Abuja from Cairo, Egypt.
He made the claim when former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, visited him at his home on Thursday night to show support.
El-Rufai explained that officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), working together with the Department of State Services (DSS), confronted him at the airport and tried to take him away. He said it was not the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as earlier speculated.
“It turned out that it’s the ICPC that procured DSS to abduct me and hades me over to them. The ICPC has never invited me.
“We just understand that it’s the ICPC not EFCC that’s responsible for what happened today and the ICPC chairman is acting of the direct order of Nuhu Ribadu,” El-Rufai said.
In his reaction, Atiku sympathised with El-Rufai and said there is a strong need for political unity as the next general election approaches.
The former Vice President said opposition parties must come together and organise properly to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
“We must come together and form very viable opposition because Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one party state,” Atiku said.
