Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has secured the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election after emerging unopposed at the party’s primary in Abuja on Tuesday.
Delegates and party leaders unanimously backed Sowore, further cementing his influence within the party ahead of the next election cycle.
Following his emergence as the AAC’s consensus candidate, Sowore stepped down as the party’s national chairman. He is also the founder of the AAC, established in 2018.
Supporters cheered as he was presented with the party’s flag after clinching the ticket.
In his acceptance speech, Sowore promised to drive what he called a “revolutionary change” to reshape Nigeria’s political and economic future. He said the country must tackle corruption, unemployment, insecurity and poor governance, which he argued have worsened hardship for millions of Nigerians, especially young people.
He added that the AAC was created to pursue a “new Nigeria” built on accountability, justice and people-centred governance. Sowore also thanked delegates nationwide for their resilience, sacrifice and continued faith in the party despite political pressure.
This marks the third straight time Sowore will contest the presidency unchallenged on the AAC platform. He polled 33,953 votes to finish fifth in 2019 and secured 14,608 votes in 2023.
Sowore criticised the economy, saying unemployment and corruption continue to hurt development and limit opportunities. He also rejected growing opposition coalitions ahead of 2027, insisting real political strength comes from grassroots supporters and committed party members.
Meanwhile, the AAC has opened its Expression of Interest process for aspirants seeking elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the move will deepen internal democracy, transparency and wider participation.
