Barcelona reach agreement with Newcastle to sign Gordon

Barcelona have agreed to sign winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth 69.3 million (80 million) inclusive of add-ons. The England international is due to fly to Spain on Thursday for a medical before the move is finalised ahead of the World Cup.

Bayern Munich were previously heavily linked with Gordon, but they are not planning a rival bid despite earlier interest in pairing him with Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.

The transfer comes even though Gordon finished the season as Newcastle’s top scorer with 18 goals. He was an unused substitute in the Magpies’ final four matches — a tactical move to protect his fitness ahead of the expected switch.

Gordon had only recently signed a long-term contract extension at St James’ Park in October 2024, leaving four years on his deal. Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson admitted earlier this year that the club would need to sell major assets to fund their own summer recruitment.

Gordon’s arrival at Barcelona now throws the future of current loanee Marcus Rashford into sharp focus. The Manchester United loanee has made it clear he wants to stay at Barcelona next season and is reportedly willing to take a pay cut. Manchester United are refusing to negotiate another loan and believe their 26 million option-to-buy price is more than fair.

With Gordon coming in, Rashford may see the World Cup as a crucial audition to convince Hansi Flick and the Barcelona hierarchy to keep him.
