Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra and a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said that American President Donald Trump described Nigeria as a “disgraced country” because it allows a certificate forger to become president.
Speaking at his official declaration for the ADC presidential ticket in Akwa Ibom on Saturday, Mr Obi took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, referencing the ongoing controversies surrounding his academic certificate.
“I went to Indonesia. I went to their election organiser, and I asked the chairman, ‘What is the qualification to be a president?’ and he told me. I said, supposing somebody forged and his qualification is forged. He said what do you mean? ‘You will be jailed,’” Mr Obi said.
He highlighted Indonesia’s strict laws on certificate forgery and recalled how Nigeria’s Supreme Court dismissed allegations of Mr Tinubu’s certificate forgery as a pre-election matter.
“Here, (Nigeria) they’ll tell you it is before the election, a pre-election matter. Somebody forged a certificate or does not have a certificate. What a country. That’s why the American president said that ‘disgraced country called Nigeria,’” Mr Obi added.
