At least 30 people were killed and several others kidnapped after gunmen attacked Dutsin Dan Ajiya village in Anka Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
The attack happened around midnight on Thursday and lasted into the early hours of Friday.
Residents said the armed men, who reportedly rode in on motorcycles, blocked the village entrance and started shooting randomly before abducting people.
“After blocking all the roads, the bandits started to shoot at sight, and the villagers ran helter-skelter. After the attack, we realised that 30 people were killed, some were wounded, while several others are at large and nobody knows their whereabouts,” a resident said.
The attack comes less than 48 hours after the Zamfara State Government unveiled new security equipment and surveillance drones to boost the fight against crime.
Governor Dauda Lawal presented the tools alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd).
Lawal has now instructed Deputy Governor Mani Mumuni to visit the affected community to comfort residents and pass the Governor’s condolences to the victims’ families.
