A businessman, Nasiru Dayyabu, has taken the father of his former fiancée, Mallam Sani Direba, and two others to Shari’a Court II in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, over the refund of N260,000 paid during marriage arrangements.
Through his lawyer, Mr. Sani Sunusi, Dayyabu told the court that in 2025, he sent representatives from Karaye in Kano State to Kaduna to seek the hand of Direba’s daughter in marriage.
“We paid the dowry and the introduction money (kudin gausuwa) and were waiting for them to set a date for the wedding. Unfortunately, the lady’s father called to inform us that they have cancelled the marriage,” he said.
Sunusi said his client had been seeking a refund of the N250,000 dowry and N10,000 introduction fee since September 2025, but all efforts failed.
He added that Dayyabu travelled from Kano to Kaduna three times over the matter before hiring a lawyer and filing the suit, a move he said affected his client’s finances.
The lawyer asked the court to order the defendants to pay an additional N250,000 for the time allegedly wasted.
In response, the three defendants told the court they had brought the N260,000 and were ready to hand it over.
However, on the demand for N250,000 in costs, the first defendant argued that it was Dayyabu, not them, who called off the marriage.
Judge Mallam Yakubu Abdullahi asked the defendants if they had witnesses, and they replied that they did. The case was adjourned until June 17 for the defendants to present their witnesses.
