NDC in Trouble as Kwankwaso Plans Exit Over Power Sharing

A new political crisis is unfolding in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after changes were made to the list of constituency candidates in Kano State, a move said to have upset former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The party’s Kano leadership, headed by chairman Hussaini Isah Mairiga, approved a revised list of candidates for federal and state legislative seats. The party said the changes were necessary to maintain an existing power-sharing deal.

Party sources said the adjustments were made to enforce a “60/40 arrangement” between the Kwankwasiyya faction and the party’s original structure. Under the agreement, 60 per cent of elective positions go to the Kwankwasiyya bloc, while 40 per cent remain with the party’s mainstream leadership.

The new list features fresh nominees in several federal constituencies, including Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada and others. Changes were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in key constituencies such as Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu.

The decision has reportedly raised tension within the party, with insiders claiming Kwankwaso is considering leaving the NDC if the affected candidates are not returned to the list, Discoverer Nigeria report.

The situation highlights growing divisions within the party ahead of future elections and has raised concerns about its unity and political stability in Kano State.
