The Federal Government has launched FreeTV, a new national digital television platform that will give Nigerians access to more than 100 TV channels without paying monthly subscription fees.
The platform is designed to widen access to quality digital broadcasting across the country. It will allow households to watch a broad mix of news, entertainment, sports, educational and cultural programmes at no ongoing cost.
The government said FreeTV is part of its push to strengthen digital inclusion, improve access to information and speed up Nigeria’s move to digital broadcasting. The service is also expected to make television more accessible, especially for low-income families and underserved communities.
Officials said the project will open up more opportunities for local content creators and broadcasters by giving Nigerian programmes a wider distribution platform.
Under the new system, viewers with compatible digital television sets or decoders can access channels free of charge after the initial setup, removing the need for monthly subscription payments.
This comes as bandits continue to ravage the country, with more than 100 Nigerians, including schoolchildren, currently being held by kidnappers.
