Gunmen have killed a pregnant woman and a young man during an attack on Dyan community in Rim Village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Sources in the community said the attackers entered the area around 10 p.m. on Friday and started shooting, killing the two victims and causing panic among residents.
The victims were identified as 32-year-old Mrs. Happiness Pam, who was pregnant, and 24-year-old Daniel Luka.
Reacting to the incident, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killings, describing the attack as brutal and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rwang Tengwong, the group said it received news of the attack with shock and sadness. It noted that similar attacks have continued to happen in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State.
“It is painful that a pregnant woman carrying the hopes of her family and an innocent young man with a bright future became victims of another senseless act of violence.
“These killings are not only attacks on individuals but also attacks on the peace, security and humanity of our people,” the statement said.
BYM expressed sympathy to the families of the victims, the people of Dyan community, Rim Village and the entire Riyom Local Government Area.
The group called on security agencies to step up efforts to arrest those responsible and make sure they face justice. It also urged the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to take stronger steps to protect vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, the association raised concern over the reported kidnapping of two drivers along the Kassa axis of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
According to BYM, the victims were travelling on the road around 10 p.m. on Thursday when armed men stopped them and took them away.
The association called on security agencies to increase efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims and improve security along major roads in affected communities.
BYM also advised residents to stay alert and, where possible, avoid travelling late at night on risky routes. The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting lawful efforts to restore peace and security across Plateau State.
Our correspondent reports that the latest incident is one of several attacks recorded in parts of Plateau State in the past week.
