President Bola Tinubu has removed Wale Edun from his role as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, in a move that has stirred fresh talk inside government circles.
Edun did not go alone. The President also sacked Ahmed Muda Dangiwa, who until now served as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
The announcement came through a memo released by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Following the shake-up, Edun has been told to hand over immediately to Taiwo Oyedele, who now steps in as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Before this new role, Oyedele served as Minister of State for Finance.
In the housing ministry, Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD.) has been named as the ministerial nominee and minister designate for the Housing and Urban Development Ministry. Dangiwa has also been directed to hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry.
The memo clearly stated that “all handing over and taking over processes should be completed on or before close of business on Thursday 23rd April, 2026.”
Giving reasons for the sudden changes, Akume explained: “These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He added that the President approved the cabinet reshuffle by fully using his powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended).
Tinubu also appreciated the outgoing ministers for their service to the country and wished them well in their future plans.
According to Akume, the President also assured members of the cabinet that “the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous.”
