They’ll Send These to Hack Your Bank Accounts — CBN Raises Alarm

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians over a rise in fake messages, emails, and online posts aimed at tricking people into giving up access to their bank accounts.

In a statement released on Wednesday by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, the apex bank said these misleading messages are designed to deceive the public, steal sensitive personal details, and spread false claims about the bank’s leadership and activities.

The CBN explained that many of these scam messages push people to click on unsafe links and submit private information, pretending to be official instructions from the bank.

“These fraudulent messages, which prompt recipients to click links, peddle false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues, are intended to hack personal accounts,” the statement said.

The bank made it clear that its only official website is www.cbn.gov.ng, urging Nigerians to always confirm any information through approved communication channels.

It also advised the public not to open suspicious links or share personal or financial details on unknown platforms, warning that doing so could expose them to cyber fraud and financial loss.

The CBN further encouraged Nigerians to report any suspicious messages, emails, or websites to relevant security and law enforcement agencies for quick action.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the financial system, the apex bank said it is strengthening its cybersecurity systems in partnership with security agencies to reduce and fight digital financial crimes across the country.
