2027: Tinubu Wins APC Primary as Osifo Suffers Heavy Defeat

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday won the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary for the 2027 election, defeating his only challenger, Stanley Osifo, in a nationwide exercise party leaders described as a strong endorsement of his leadership.

Results collated from several states showed Tinubu polling more than 8.2 million votes. Osifo secured 1,007 votes in Abia, five in Bayelsa and one in Edo.

The exercise was largely peaceful and drew large numbers of party members across the country’s 8,809 wards. APC leaders said the turnout reflected the party’s unity and grassroots strength ahead of 2027.

Tinubu voted at Ikoyi-Obalende Ward L2 in Lagos alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. Speaking afterward, he praised the process.

“This is a demonstration of internal democracy, and it has been going on very well according to plan. This is grassroots politics where every member of the party has the right to participate.

“It shows that we have internal democracy and it’s peaceful and well organised.”

He also commended APC governors for overseeing the process.

“I am very satisfied that governors have done well in their various states, from the ward congresses to local government congresses to delegate accreditation, validation, membership registration and the certification of the electoral process.

“It has been done very well and with this, you could rate democracy at a high level.”

APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda said the primary highlighted the party’s cohesion.

“The calm and coordinated atmosphere witnessed here reflects the commitment of party faithful to internal democracy and credible electoral processes.

“This is a critical democratic exercise that underscores the strength and unity of the APC as we prepare for the 2027 general elections.”

Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila said the turnout showed continued support for Tinubu despite economic challenges.

Across the states, Tinubu recorded overwhelming victories. He secured all votes cast in Borno’s Mafa Ward, polled 100,880 votes in Osun, 407,646 in Delta, 280,082 in Rivers, 277,192 in Bayelsa and 131,096 in Edo. In Abia, he defeated Osifo 161,005 votes to 1,007.

APC leaders said the outcome has strengthened the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general election.
