Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo on Wednesday remanded 73-year-old Olarenwaju Hamid after he was accused of sexually abusing a teenager and trying to procure an abortion.
Hamid was arraigned on a two-count charge of unlawful carnal knowledge and attempt to procure an abortion. His plea was not taken.
Prosecutor Mr Saheed Abiodun told the court the alleged offences happened sometime in March at Idi-Ori, Abeokuta. He said the defendant, who was the caregiver to the 15-year-old girl, “on several occasions, had carnal knowledge with her,” which resulted in pregnancy. Abiodun also said Hamid tried to procure an illegal abortion, offering the victim N50,000 to terminate the pregnancy.
Abiodun moved an ex parte motion asking the court to remand the defendant. He sought 60 days in the Ibara Correctional Centre pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The prosecutor said the acts contravened Section 32 of the Child’s Right Law and Section 228 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.
Magistrate Mrs A.K. Araba ordered Hamid remanded at the Oba Correctional Service Centre, pending legal advice from the State DPP. The case was adjourned until Sept. 14 for mention.
