Bad Governance: Atiku Sets Fresh Agenda, Set To Table Nigeria’s Matters Before the US

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has revealed plans to travel to the United States, raising alarm over what he called the “alarming deterioration” of Nigeria’s security, governance, and economy.

In a statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Paul Ibe, it was disclosed that the trip will see him meet “policy and institutional stakeholders in the US.” The date for the visit has not yet been fixed.

According to Ibe, Abubakar believes “Nigeria is facing a full-blown internal crisis, one that can no longer be downplayed, politicised, or explained away”.

He pointed to worsening violence across regions, saying, “From the ravaging violence in the North-West and North-East, to the persistent bloodshed in the Middle Belt, and the growing spread of kidnapping and criminality across the country, Atiku warns that the Nigerian state is steadily losing its grip on its most fundamental responsibility: the protection of lives and property.”

Abubakar stressed that “the situation has moved beyond isolated incidents to a pattern of systemic failure”, adding that “communities are being overrun, livelihoods destroyed, and citizens abandoned to their fate”.

He argued that any government that fails to ensure basic security loses the moral right to lead.

On the economy, he described the hardship Nigerians face as “both severe and avoidable”, warning that “rising inflation, a weakened currency, and collapsing purchasing power have pushed millions into distress, while policy inconsistency and lack of strategic direction continue to erode confidence in the economy”.

The former vice-president also raised concerns about democratic institutions, cautioning that falling public trust in governance, accountability, and elections threatens national stability. He warned that any move to tamper with future election outcomes could damage both unity and legitimacy.

Defending his planned foreign engagement, Abubakar dismissed claims of inviting outside interference, insisting Nigeria cannot ignore global attention. He said the world is already watching and questioned whether leaders are ready to face the truth.

He maintained that while Nigerians alone will choose their leaders, international partners have a valid interest in the country’s stability, governance, and democracy.
