Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson as their first major signing of the summer window.
Multiple reports say the deal is close: United are expected to pay an initial £35 million plus £3 million in performance-related add-ons for the 26-year-old. Senior club officials have played down suggestions that an agreement is done, but talks are understood to be moving positively.
Ederson has only 12 months left on his Atalanta contract, so this summer is a key chance for the Serie A side to cash in on one of their most important midfielders.
The move comes as United continue rebuilding under new head coach Michael Carrick after a strong season that finished with third place in the Premier League. United also announced third-quarter profits of £37.7 million for the nine months to March 31, and chief executive Omar Berrada has voiced confidence in the club’s direction and long-term progress.
Despite still carrying significant transfer debt, United want to strengthen key areas while avoiding the costly long-term deals that have caused problems before. Central midfield is a major priority after Casemiro’s exit and uncertainty over Manuel Ugarte. The club are thought to want at least two midfield signings, though top target Elliot Anderson reportedly favours a move to Manchester City.
Ederson has impressed in Serie A with his energy, defensive discipline and ball-carrying — traits United hope will boost Carrick’s midfield next season.
