BREAKING: Edo Govt Shuts Down Three Schools Over DSS Alert of Possible Kidnap

The Edo State Government has ordered the temporary closure of three public secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following a security alert.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School.

The decision was announced in a circular dated June 9, 2026, issued by the State Ministry of Education and made available to journalists in Benin City.

According to the ministry, the move followed a security warning from the Department of State Services (DSS) over an alleged planned mass abduction of schoolchildren in Edo North Senatorial District.

The circular, signed by Enodolomwanyi Otamere on behalf of the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, was addressed to the principals of the affected schools.

It stated that intelligence reports from security agencies pointed to credible threats against students, staff and school communities in parts of Akoko-Edo.

“Consequently, and in line with the Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, approval has been granted for the temporary closure of the affected schools with immediate effect

“All academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools are hereby suspended with immediate effect and shall remain so until further notice from the Ministry.

“However, candidates currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) shall be allowed access to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements and supervision as may be provided by the relevant security agencies and community stakeholders”, it added.

The ministry directed principals to ensure the safe release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities and property, maintain close contact with education and security authorities, and comply with any further directives.
