Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a heartbreaking loss after his wife and two children died in the powerful twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela, his club confirmed on Sunday.
Trejo, who plays for Venezuela’s second-division side Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira, spent three days searching through the rubble for his wife, Yanina, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa. Rescue workers later recovered their bodies, US media reported.
“Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” the club said in an Instagram post alongside a family photo.
Trejo, 38, was attending a team training camp in Caracas when the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck on Wednesday evening, according to CNN.
He rushed back to his home in La Guaira, the state hit hardest by the disaster, where he was met with “a horrific scene,” his brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, told CNN.
“He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Ardiles said.
Venezuelan authorities said on Sunday that nearly 1,500 people have died, while tens of thousands remain unaccounted for.
