Former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary, setting himself up for the 2027 race.
Returning officer Tunde Ogbeha announced the result Wednesday night. Atiku pulled in a whopping 1,846,370 votes, beating former Rivers governor and ex‑transport minister Rotimi Amaechi, who scored 504,117, and Mohammed Hayatu‑Deen, who got 177,120, The Cable reported.
Atiku also took decisive wins in Kano, Lagos and Kebbi as collation continued nationwide, putting him firmly ahead of his ADC rivals, Vanguard said. The victory instantly reshapes the political landscape, pitching Atiku into a likely showdown with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other opposition figures such as Peter Obi.
With the ADC primary done, all eyes will turn to talks about alliances, campaign plans and coalition moves. Opposition parties are already consulting, and observers say Atiku’s emergence could crank up the competition as the 2027 election race gathers pace.
