Ambassador Blessing Fubara Senior, brother of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has declared for the governorship race under the Nigerian Democratic Congress, promising to serve only one term if elected.
Ahead of the party’s primary, he described himself as a “ready, competent and energetic” candidate determined to restore peace, stability and economic growth in Rivers State.
Fubara said the state had lost investments, opportunities and dignity, urging people across party and ethnic lines to rise and reclaim Rivers.
“We have lost opportunities. We have lost investments. We have lost our dignity as a people. We have lost our pride as Rivers people,” he said.
He also said Rivers now looked “distressed,” “shortchanged,” and “almost like a conquered state.”
The aspirant insisted the Rivers South-East Senatorial District must complete its eight-year tenure under the state’s zoning arrangement. He warned that changing the rotation system would set a “wrong and dangerous precedent.”
Fubara vowed to serve only four years before supporting power shift to another district.
“Therefore, I have vowed to do just a 4-year one-term tenure to bring the expected prosperity and development in River State,” he said.
He also claimed political strength belonged to the people, not money, and called on supporters across the state’s 23 local government areas to mobilise for the party primary.
Fubara further urged his “elder brother” in the race to step down and support what he called “the uprising of the people.”
