The Oyo State Police Command has opened an inquiry after a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, was allegedly attacked and killed by a masquerade and his followers during a procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan.
The incident was reported to Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday by Mrs. Aderemi, who said her elder sister called to say Kehinde was attacked at about 4 p.m. by a masquerade identified as Asoleke and members of his group. Police say the assailants used axes and cutlasses.
Mapo Division officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer, rushed the victim to hospital, but medical personnel confirmed he died on arrival. Officers processed the scene and took photographs. At the family’s request, the body was released for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The command says the masquerade, Asoleke, has been arrested. Four other suspects are still on the run. Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed probes. Police say efforts continue to arrest the fleeing suspects and asked residents to share any useful information, reassuring the public of their commitment to protecting lives and property.
