Manchester United have moved fast to land their first big signing of the summer, agreeing a £35 million deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Éderson.
The 26-year-old is set to sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option to extend for a further 12 months. The transfer should be wrapped up in early July, pending a medical, before United start pre-season.
Éderson will be United’s first signing since Michael Carrick was made permanent head coach last month. The deal also includes up to £3.9 million (€4.5 million) in performance-related add-ons.
He is expected to be the first of several midfield arrivals as United rebuild the area after compatriot Casemiro’s contract expires at the end of the month. Éderson has three caps for Brazil and was in the country’s provisional 55-man squad for the 2026 World Cup before missing out on Carlo Ancelotti’s final selection.
He arrives with a strong CV from Atalanta: versatile, energetic and good at winning the ball, Éderson has scored 16 goals in 180 appearances across all competitions for the Italian side.
United’s recruitment has also seen big changes under minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The club has overhauled its data analysis team under Michael Sansoni, the former senior Mercedes F1 executive, and Sansoni has worked with director of football Jason Wilcox to identify targets.
Carrick says he has been involved in recruitment talks since succeeding Ruben Amorim on an interim basis in January, and Éderson now looks set to be the first major signing of this new era at Old Trafford.
