Morocco Breaks Nigeria’s Long-Standing African World Cup Goal Record

Morocco’s 4-2 win over Haiti did more than send them into the World Cup knockouts — it rewrote African football history.

The Atlas Lions’ four goals lifted their all-time World Cup tally to 26, making them the highest-scoring African nation at the tournament, according to CAF. That edges Nigeria into second with 23 goals, and Cameroon sits third on 22.

That victory also took Morocco to 26 World Cup matches played, drawing them level with Cameroon as the most-capped African nation at the Finals. Nigeria have 21 matches, while Ghana and Senegal are tied on 15 appearances.

Per the BBC, Morocco now hold the African record for most World Cup wins too — seven — leapfrogging Ghana’s six. The AFCON 2025 champions’ rise has been steady: they earned Africa’s first World Cup point in 1970 (a draw with Bulgaria), became the first African team to win a World Cup group in 1986, and stunned the world by reaching the 2022 semi-finals.

This 2026 campaign has been strong. Morocco went unbeaten in Group C: a 1-1 draw with Brazil, a 1-0 win over Scotland, then the 4-2 against Haiti. They conceded twice in that last game, and finished level on seven points with Brazil — but took second place on goal difference. Scotland finished third with three points.

Nigeria’s old edge in tournament attacking output has, for now, gone. The Super Eagles haven’t scored at a World Cup since Victor Moses’ penalty in the 2-1 loss to Argentina in 2018. With Cameroon absent from 2026, Morocco could pull further ahead before the tournament ends.
