The National Broadcasting Commission says Nigerians can now watch Free TV on their phones as well as on satellite decoders.
NBC’s director-general, Charles Ebuebu, disclosed this in an interview on Wednesday in Abuja. He said the move targets younger viewers who prefer mobile apps and changing viewing habits.
“The Free TV Digital Switch Over signal is not only available using the decoders. As we speak, you can watch it on your phone. Users can download the Free TV application from the Play Store or iOS platforms and gain access after completing a simple registration process. You download the FreeTV app, whether on the Play Store or iOS, if you are using a Mac or Apple product,” he said.
Ebuebu stressed the app is free; users only need to register with WhatsApp, Gmail or other available accounts. On data costs, he noted broadcasting has evolved and that most Nigerians are youths who spend much time on mobile platforms.
“What do these youths access? What do they watch? Their TikTok, their WhatsApp, it’s all on the phone,” Mr Ebuebu said.
He explained the commission will keep satellite broadcasts—important for rural areas—while adding mobile access for youngsters. “Anyone in the village buys a decoder for less than N20,000 and has it free for life,” he said.
Satellite serves the masses; mobile attracts youth. “Studies have shown they watch it basically on mobile digital devices, so that’s why we decided to go the two ways,” he said.
NBC says the dual approach will spread Nigerian TV at home and abroad, and Nigerians anywhere can watch via the FreeTV app.
