A student of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku has reportedly died after being chased by police officers in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State. A vigilante involved in the chase also lost his life.
The Nigeria Police Force Complaint Response Unit said on Friday that “Investigation is ongoing,” in a post on X. The statement came after human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu raised the alarm on Thursday.
According to Mr Gwamnishu, police officers and a civilian hunter allegedly chased the student over an offence that has not yet been confirmed. During the pursuit, the student reportedly fell into an open well filled with water. The hunter chasing him also fell into the same well. Both men were later brought out dead.
Mr Gwamnishu stated, “Today (Thursday), a tragic incident involving a Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic student and a civilian Nigeria Police, Area Command Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State.
“Police officers alongside a civilian hunter allegedly chased a student without considering the dangers around the environment. Unknown to the young man, there was an open well filled with water. He fell inside, and the hunter chasing him also fell into the same well. Sadly, both were brought out dead.”
Delta State Police Commissioner Yemi Oyeniyi confirmed the incident and said the officers involved had been identified. Police spokesman Bright Edafe said more details would be released later.
