The Ondo State Government has ordered the temporary closure of some public primary and secondary schools ahead of the APC State House of Assembly election set for Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The directive came in a statement from the Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The ministry said the affected schools would serve as polling centres across the state’s 18 local government areas.
Officials said the move was aimed at protecting students, teachers, and other school workers during the election.
“All learners, teachers, and other staff in the affected schools are hereby directed to stay at home on the election day,” the statement said.
The ministry added that the decision was needed to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and secure voting process inside school premises.
Heads of affected schools will be contacted directly to enforce the order. Officials from Zonal and Area Education Offices will also monitor compliance in the affected councils.
The government, however, assured parents and students sitting for the ongoing WAEC-SSCE exams that arrangements had been made to allow examinations continue safely in affected schools, especially for students staying in boarding houses.
Academic activities in the affected schools are expected to resume fully on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
