A sudden rainstorm and flash flood ripped through Unguwar Katsinawa, Bara Village in Kirfi LGA, Bauchi State, leaving two people dead and many homeless.
The victims were identified as Aisha Sagir and her 4-year-old granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu. The storm, with strong winds, also destroyed several houses, livestock and valuables worth millions of naira.
A local, Muhammad Nasiru, told Daily Trust the worst damage came from a fast-moving flood from the neighbouring Jambba area that swept into Bara and washed away homes. He said: “The flooded water struck from an unknown location at high speed destroying houses, livestock and other valueables because nobody thought of water coming from that location in Bara. Surprisingly the water flooded houses and killed two persons including a 50-year-old housewife and her granddaughter at Unguwar Katsinawa,” Nasiru said. He added that many families are now without homes.
The Bauchi State Police confirmed the tragedy. Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib said in a statement: “At about 1000 hours today, 10th June 2026, Kirfi LGA experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The severe weather incident resulted in the tragic loss of Aisha Sagir, 50-year-old, and her granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, 4-year-old, both of Unguwar Katsinawa, Bara Village, Kirfi LGA,” the statement read.
“In addition to the loss of lives, the rainstorm destroyed several houses, livestock, and other valuables worth millions of naira.
“Police operatives attached to Kirfi Division have visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage and to maintain order in the affected community.”
