The Plateau Police Command has warned its officers not to demand or search people’s mobile phones unlawfully.
Mr Bassey Ewah, the state Commissioner of Police, gave the warning while speaking to personnel in Jos. Mr Alfred Alabo, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, made the disclosure in a statement on Thursday in Jos.
“No personnel of this command has the legal authority to search mobile phone of any citizen on the road without a court warrant,” Alabo quoted Ewah as saying.
The PPRO said the commissioner also repeated the command’s promise to act professionally and warned against unprofessional conduct. He told residents to politely refuse any unlawful attempt by officers to search their phones and to report such incidents to the nearest police station.
Alabo gave phone numbers for reporting harassment: 08034448617, 08060545670, 08037681026, 09016146804 and 09051145757.
The PPRO also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the lives, property and rights of law‑abiding residents, saying this is in line with global best practices.
