Seven people have died in a fatal road crash involving a Sienna bus along the Okene-Lokoja Road at Osara settlement in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The bus, with registration number Edo: SGD 517 XL, was travelling from Auchi to Abuja when the crash happened on Sunday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses said the driver suddenly lost control of the bus and crashed into a stationary truck. The impact killed the truck driver and his motor mate, who were fixing a punctured tyre.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, said the accident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday near Osara settlement.
He said the bus was moving at high speed when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the parked articulated vehicle.
“The driver was on top speed when his tyre burst. In the process, he lost control of the vehicle, left his track and rammed into a stationary articulated vehicle beside the road side, where its driver and motor mate were fixing a punctured tyre.
“Seven persons, including motor mate of the truck driver, died on the spot, while three persons survived the carnage. The injured were taken to a hospital at Okene for treatment, while the dead were deposited at another hospital at Okene for autopsy,” he said.
Fagge urged drivers to always inspect their vehicles properly before starting any journey to help prevent such accidents on the highways.
