Southampton and Royal Antwerp have paid emotional tributes after the death of Nigerian forward Victor Udoh, aged 21.
Udoh, who played for Southampton’s academy and for Belgian side Royal Antwerp, was reportedly found dead in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. He spent six months at Southampton after joining in February 2025, making eight appearances for the Saints’ under-21s in Premier League 2.
Before England, Udoh came through Royal Antwerp’s academy, shining for the “Young Reds” and then breaking into the first team. He scored 12 goals in 27 academy matches and went on to make 28 appearances for Antwerp’s senior side.
After leaving Southampton in September, Udoh signed for Czech second-tier club SK Dynamo České Budějovice.
Southampton said they were shocked and saddened by the news. “We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21,” Southampton said in a statement posted on X. “The thoughts of everyone at the club go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”
Royal Antwerp also paid tribute. “With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh,” the Belgian club said. “Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time.”
Fans and the wider football community in Nigeria and Europe have poured out grief, remembering Udoh as a talented young player whose career promised much.
