Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore collapsed during a confrontation with police at a Democracy Day protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
A policeman had used tear gas to disperse those who had gathered to protest insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance. Security personnel deployed tear gas canisters in an apparent attempt to break up the gathering, and demonstrators were dispersed.
Amid the chaos, Sowore was seen surrounded by people who tried to resuscitate him. He has now reportedly been taken to an undisclosed hospital for further examination and treatment.
