Kylian Mbappé, France’s captain, has slammed Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, calling her a “despicable woman” after she allegedly made racist comments about him following France’s World Cup win over Paraguay.
Mbappé posted on X on Monday, accusing Amarilla of racism and saying her behaviour had stolen the spotlight from Paraguay’s World Cup run. He did not hold back:
“Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition.
“Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.
“I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world,” Mbappe wrote.
France beat Paraguay 1-0 in the World Cup round of 16 in Philadelphia on Saturday, with Mbappé scoring the only goal from the penalty spot. The match is now also remembered for this off-field row.
